I see this issue discussed all the time...Is there any ONE best choice? I believe the answer to be no, for any number of reasons. I want to hear your preferences and reasoning behind your choice. As of right now I have a Sringfield XD-m in .40 S&W (16+1 cap) with an Insight M3 tactical illuminator. What I really need to do is take the wife to the range and see what she prefers and use that as the home defense piece seeing as how she is home a lot more often than I am. Any way, I know we have touched on the subject in previous threads but I think the subject is worthy of its own place on here.

I think depending on the circumstances I'd prefer a short barrel shotgun and some buckshot. For some reason when I think home defense I picture myself in a room with intruders in the hallway. I like the idea of being able to stick the gun out into the hallway, pull the trigger and be almost guaranteed to hit the intruder. Granted I'll need new paint and wallpaper, but that's ok. Also, if someone's breaking into my house, the last thing they want to hear is the sound of a pump shotgun chambering a round. That's just my .02, I know there's better choices for different situations, but IMO a SBS would be the best choice in general.

While I tend to disagree with the whole point it down the hall and shoot with a guarantee to hit the BG, I agree with a shotgun. Mine primary night HD gun has a light attached to it. It's a Mossberg 500 with a colapasable buttstock (see my thread in the 2nd ammendment forum). Loaded with a beanbag first and a 00 buck after that. Whatever I shine that light on, will not be happy when I pull the trigger. I can group the buckshot to minute of pie plate at any distance in my house. My wife has her M&P9 in the bedroom as well. Durring the day, while watching TV or the kid, my carry gun and my wife's carry gun are in VERY close proximity to us. She has a 9mm Walther PPS and I have a .38 spl S&W J frame. By my computer is my SW99 in 9mm.

I look at home defense as the same as general self defense. I have found guns that fit me and my wife. We go shoot them for fun and practice. They then naturally become our home defense weapons as they are 2nd nature to us.

I would like to use my 870 for home defense but I think the pattern is a little too large. It has the 18 inch police barrel, 7 round mag and a Knoxx collapsing recoil reducer stock. I set it up for home defense but 00 buck lays a massive pattern at even 5 yards or so. I may have to go to the range and pattern it again just to be sure.

For home defense, my first stage is two very large and protective dogs. Not much will get past them. After that i have a ruger .45, also have a mossberg shotgun but IMO to big to jump up and grab in an emergency

Impressive arsenal...but do you really want to get that close to the bad guy?? Hell, even your long range weapon (mop) still means you have to get within 4 feet of the guy. Im thinking maybe one of those telescoping light bulb changers might be a viable option...i get like a 20 foot range with mine.

OK, great...you do have a ranged weapon with the shoes. I have been racking my brain to come up with a good suggestion for a projectile weapon but you have beat me to the punch. Shoes are the obvious choice...cant go wrong with those.
